A Dead-End in the Industry

Pros

Full-time benefits are slightly better than most “starter” jobs in the entertainment industry. Work is easy (to the point of being mind-numbingly boring) and you never have to take it home with you.

Cons

Workplace environment is absolutely atrocious. No feedback from management, absolutely zero chance of developing or gaining skills in the casting industry, or building a network with casting directors. Pay is terrible and raises are insultingly low, if they happen at all. In a few years, a better alternative to Breakdown will come along and the industry will abandon this sinking ship for good. Lastly, google “Deadline Breakdown Services” before you decide to work there.

Pros

A few nice co-workers who also hate their jobs.

Cons

literally everything else. They pay most employees only $15 per hour #PayUpHollywood On my first day I learned that I didn’t have a supervisor because he had been fired for allegedly R*PING a former employee (who was also fired by the way). You can find out more about it in the article posted on Deadline titled: "Casting Giant Breakdown Services Hit With Allegations Of Employee R*pe, Sex Offender Hire and Retaliation" Needless to say, I continued job-hunting since day 1. The director of operations mentioned in the article for being extremely ruthless is seriously the worst person I have ever met in my entire life. She not only looks like a storybook witch, she also behaves like one. She told me on my first day that I didn’t have a supervisor so she would step in for a while. Then whenever I had a question, or needed to request a day off she would either ignore my emails or tell me she’s not the one I should be asking. She also basically kicked me out of her office one time yelling “ASK SOMEONE ELSE NOT ME” The owner of the company is the most pathetic human being. He has no power over casting directors and lets them walk all over him. He buys a bunch of equipment (cameras, laptops) and lets them borrow it “indefinitely”. Part of my job was delivering equipment and I felt completely unsafe because they had me going INSIDE casting directors HOMES. Many of the casting directors are really nice and they said he is an embarrassment to the casting community because of his reputation with women. He also humiliates employees in front of everyone. He would often come up and yell: WHO DID THIS? and make everyone feel super uncomfortable. He brought his serious and rude “wife” as his second in command. On my first day, when they introduced her to me as only his wife, she didn't even smile. She just bosses people around. She also canceled the Christmas parties replacing it with a “pot luck” and forces employees to bring food to the event. If you don’t bring food, you’re not allowed to eat. She also forced the front desk lady to put saran wrap all over the floors so the “animals” who work there wouldn’t drop food on the carpet. That would make sense if the work place was clean. It wasn’t. It never is. Oh my "Christmas bonus" was a $47 Kroger card. The office space is DISGUSTING. I mean absolutely gross and dirty and the owner doesn’t care about it. There are parts of the ceiling missing, the kitchen is stinky, full of ants and always dirty (not even going to mention inside the fridge and microwave) and they simply don’t care. Why? Because they don’t care about their employees. Trash cans are always full, and they started asking us to empty the trash cans outside. No, they don’t have a cleaning crew or maintenance people to do that. Gary also brings his huge dog to work and forces the front desk lady to walk the dog. Ceiling lights and AC vents make a lot of noise and it’s distracting. On my first day, when I was shown to my desk I was horrified. It was completely covered in dust and the drawers were full of notes from the former employee. They didn’t even clean up the desk for my first day. Talk about feeling welcomed. On my first day I noticed that the stairs up to fourth floor where I worked was boarded up between steps. When I asked my coworkers why, they said BECAUSE THERE WAS A GUY WHO SAT ON A DESK UNDER THE STAIRS AND HE WAS LOOKING UNDER WOMEN’S SKIRTS WHILE THEY WERE CLIMBING UP THE STAIRS. And instead of firing him, they put cardboard on the spaces between steps AND moved his desk. THANK GOD I quit to start an amazing new job that I love, but I stayed friends with a couple of people and they told me that during the pandemic: - They fired an employee who had worked there for over 32 years because they found old messages on his slack saying bad things about the owner's wife. - They fired one of the best employees who had been working there for 3 years because she was living with her parents in Florida during the pandemic. Basically forcing her to come back to LA (hub of the pandemic) even though she was doing a great job working LA hours remotely. Note: everyone was working remotely. They have fired so many people in the short 6 months I worked there and clearly kept firing people after I left. If you have love for your mental health, please know your worth and DO NOT ACCEPT A JOB HERE.

WORST PLACE I'VE EVER WORKED

Pros

No pros at all.

Cons

1. The building is old and decrepit with only one bathroom per floor and is located within the center of many homeless camps. 2. They have a parking lot but won't let you park in it because the idiots who've worked there for years have already locked the spaces down. 3. CEO is a complete nutcase who surprisingly hasn't bankrupted this company just yet. When he's not busy walking his gigantic dog and talking to himself, he can be seen playing hide the sausage with his young intern boys. 4. This place is a revolving door for most new devs, unless you were stupid enough to stay for years and years. Really not even worth working here even if you are entry level. 5. This place suffers from extreme cases of nepotism. Somebody needs to tell the managers that bring your daughter to work day is only once a year. Regardless of how grotesquely incompetent they are, their daddies won't be firing them anytime soon. 6. Upper management cannot make up their minds on which direction to go so they keep making you write code over and over and eventually end up scrapping the whole thing. That's why they keep losing money and have to get rid of their top talent because they can't afford them. Just the tip of the iceberg for a company that amazingly has remained operating for so long that I can only attribute it to sheer dumb luck.
