Pros

The old executive director no longer works here. The literal only pro I can come up with.

Cons

I am honestly disgusted by the actions BARCC has taken over the last two years. I joined the organization with hopes to stay for many years, but left because of the blatant racism from the executive director and the full support of said racism from the board of directors. Instead of addressing it, the board allowed the former ED to "retire" while they systemically fired anyone who spoke up against BARCC's racism. BARCC does not care about their employees of color. BARCC does not care about their employees of color. They fired or pushed out at least four women of color in just a couple of months this year. Turnover is incredibly high and they cannot fill positions. Jobs are posted for months on end and staff are forced to pick up the slack with no extra pay. Over a quarter of the staff have left in 2021 alone, and few to none of their positions have been replaced. BARCC severely underpays their employees, and they know they do because they did a salary review this year and found that they severely underpay their employees, but they have done literally nothing about it. It took them until September to get the fiscal year budget finalized, even though the fiscal year starts in July. I do not trust that the organization will even survive the year given how poorly the finances are being handled.

I cannot in good conscience recommend that anyone works here.

Pros

1. Comprehensive services for clients. 2. Colleagues are passionate. Many of the positive reviews are from interns, who are amazing but who are not able to give a full picture a full-time employee can.

Cons

1. If you work here, do look forward to experiencing an immense amount of racism and ignorance. 2. Your manager might or might not advocate for you. 3. You will often be told to take on addititional responsibilities or lead presentations without the proper tools or support and without any pay increase. 4. Relatedly, you will be underpaid. 5. You will nearly always have to deal with abusive or hostile clients without having the proper managerial support to disengage and de-escalate. 6. Ironically, for an organization that purports to care about empowerment, you will often experience disempowerment while working here due to management making unilateral decisions about and reducing your breaks, vacation, and sick time. 7. If you attempt to advocate for yourself, you will face retaliation. 8. There is often no career progression.

Pros

The highest-rated staff reviews have (generally) been written by development staff and directors/managers. The lowest-rated staff reviews have (generally) been written by non-managerial staff. Make of that what you will.

Cons

- Low pay - Lack of career advancement opportunities
