Pros

Pay is best in the business. $100,000+ first year as a road driver. Year two I made $107,000… and took two months off for cancer surgery. Year three I made $129,000. I average 2-3 nights per week in a hotel. Usually only 1 night out then back home the next day. Frequently running turns (home at end of the run). Insurance is free and EXCELLENT coverage. I paid $1,000 total out-of-pocket for cancer surgery.

Cons

Not much life/work balance. Frustrating spending time on the extra board waiting to get a call to go to work, but with more seniority you get less wait time.

Lower level management sucks

Pros

Pay is great. Insurance is great. Work is relatively stress free. Management at the top is competent (the company is stable financially while nearly all other Teamster driving companies have gone out of business).

Cons

Unfortunately, leadership at the terminal level is horrendous. Example… they sent a driver a letter for failure to follow instructions AFTER acknowledging that driver was not given any directions. Another… manager told a driver he would pay him for something, then flat out lied about it and denied his pay. I could go on, but here’s my point… terminal level management knows nothing about leadership. They are like engineers. They have a process to follow and they cannot think for themselves beyond that process. That results in poor decisions by people that are just trying to cover their own backside. What compounds the problem is that most truly don’t care about the drivers at all. They just want to sit in their office, get paid, then go home. I had over 2,000 people under my employment at my previous job. I would only hire about 10% of the ABF terminal level management that I have met.
