      Interview

It was a quick turnaround in between interviews and knowing the outcome. Good coordination between the recruiter and the hiring manager despite the difference in the time zones. Overall a good interview process.

      Product Manager Interview

      28 Jul 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at data.ai (San Francisco, CA) in Jul 2016

      Interview

1 phone screen, 2 Skype interviews, 3 onsite interviews, 1 onsite presentation. The people at App Annie were communicative and up front throughout the process. A few red flags came up for me during the interviews - long working hours (late nights and early mornings to accomodate other offices), the struggle to communicate across time zones, and lack of collaboration between product & engineers (no engineers are in SF, and only 1 working hour overlaps with the engineering team) being the main 3. It seemed to be more of a "tell the engineers what to do" kind of work environment from what I gathered. It was curious that, when I asked, they didn't really have an answer for specific actions being taken to improve the above problems. The interviewers were kind and knowledgable in their areas of expertise. The presentation alone required a huge amount of research and preparation (20-30 hours) and involved a large section that didn't seem to directly relate to the job description I was applying for. Ask a lot of questions to clarify the prompt. Good experience overall, it just wasn't a fit.

Hi there! Nick McIntosh here, GM Core Product at App Annie. Thanks very much for your feedback, and taking the time to interview with us especially for a role in Product Management which is arguably the most important area of our business (but I might be a bit biased ;). I'd like to address a few of the points you raise as I think you've got some very important and valid points, and they're things that I'm sure many candidates consider as they interview with us. First off it's great to hear you had a good experience overall, and that it just wasn't a fit. I really appreciate you acknowledging that, because as a hiring manager it's one of the things that's often hardest to communicate - Product Management as a role, & App Annie as a company, will unfortunately not be the right fit for everyone. App Annie is very much a Product lead company. It sounds cliched but we genuinely expect Product Managers to act as mini-CEO of their product area, taking full responsibility for the product's success across all areas of the business. This means considering & collaborating on product strategy with our execs, working with marketing & sales, UI/UX, engineering - even recruiting! In many respects I think this is one of the things that sets App Annie apart, as Product is not just "engineering project management" but genuinely expected to lead across the business. Leading across the business means taking on a lot of responsibility and it is absolutely a role that requires hard work & dedication. But it also means you're in the best place to have an impact within the business, and within the app ecosystem as a whole as you shape the platform that is used by more than 500,000 app professionals. Another thing that sets App Annie apart is that even though we are a company of only 450~ people, we have a global footprint, with engineering centers in Vancouver, Utrecht (Netherlands) & Beijing. Certainly working across time zones is challenging but we adjust our systems and process as much as possible to accommodate, as well as regularly flying Product Managers to other offices to ensure that they have an opportunity to build a strong rapport and collaborate closely with the people they work with. With respect to collaboration between Product and Engineering, I know personally that if I didn't have the support of my engineering teams to collaborate with & point out which of my ideas are horrible and why, App Annie would likely be in a very different place that it is today. Finally, regarding the presentation - you're right, it is a lot of work and we try as much as possible to be upfront about this and make sure that as a candidate you're setup to succeed with many opportunities to check in and receive guidance and feedback. The questions we ask might be different to what other companies expect of Product Managers but they are very much an accurate representation of the kind of work and thinking we expect Product Managers to handle in their day to day work at App Annie, given the impact we expect this role to bring to our business. Thanks again for taking the time to interview with us, and to write a review. Feel free to reach out to myself or any member of our team if you'd like more information or have other questions or feedback. Cheers Nick McIntosh
