How does 'ls' command works in OS level? How does ping know the server is present or not before sending the packet?

Interview
The interview was for the DevOps profile and the interview lasted for an hour. 90% of the questions were related to the Linux Administrator profile. Only 2 questions were asked other than that, which were on Kubernetes. The weightage was highly given on Linux Administration. Felt an imbalance between the profile I applied for and the questions that were asked.
