      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at WD (Bengaluru) in Oct 2021

      Interview

I applied through linkedin job posting and was contacted by HR to set up interview. I was interviewed for Bangalore location. The interview supposedly consist of 3 rounds of technical interview including managerial round but got extented to 4 rounds. Round 1: Zoom interview with interviewer working from US so was asked to manage interview time after working hours. Interviewer was friendly and it was good almost 1:30 hrs of interaction which was suppose to be of an hour but got extended with mutual agreement after discussion on one of my projects went lengthy. Questions were mostly around my project work done, technologies I used in them with particular use cases. HR took almost 4-6 days to contact that I have cleared my round 1 and hence to schedule 2nd round of technical discussion. It was again in US timings. Round 2: It was purely a technical discussion related based on convolutional neural networks as most of my past work is in and around CNNs. Questions like how end to end classification in CNN works, how weights n biases gets updated, what causes vanishing gradient and how can it be avoided. What are the ways to avoid overfitting, causes of overfitting and its consequesnces. We also discussed how Regularization works. It was very healthy discussion that also got little extended to 5-10 mins. Again I was contacted after 5-6 days to schedule my next round that was suppose to be with hiring manager but at last minute due to some personal constrained at interviewer end it got re-scheduled with other manager. I was little reluctant and asked HR to directly schedule with hiring manager once he is available as HR mentioned that there might be case of discussion with hiring manager irrespective of how it goes in this round. But he said if all goes well we might also wrap things up after this call itself. Round 3: Here also we discussed about my previous projects. I was asked technical questions related to scalability of ml model sevices in production and technical challenges I have faced in my technical journey. I was asked about my expectations to which I kept my answer strictly confined to technical expectations and saved compensation part for later. HR again asked me for final discussion with hiring manager and clearly mentioned that it is more of general discussion and is non elemination round. But again I was't overwhelmed as been in industry long enough to know that no round is non-elemination round. Round 4: He was very experienced manager with almost 11 years of association with western digital. We talked about my projects. Various parameters that can be used to decide goodness of our classification model. He shared his experience with WD, and it went all good as he asked me about my notice period and early releiving to which I replied that due to dependency in my current project I might be serving my notice almost to length, to which he was pleased with my answer and said its the right thing to do. After 4 rounds of interviews and a healthy discussion with all the penalists I was pretty confident that there will be offer on the table, and I waited for a week as it was the pattern followed by HR throughout the interview process. But when I tried reaching him (HR) after 8-10 days he didn't pick the call. I also tried dropping him message regarding feedback as there aren't many reasons I gave them to reject me so wanted to know what went wrong and also to let him know that I am in my notice period as I received another offer meanwhile, but got muted after all this. This was very pathetic behaviour I found specially considering the brand value and words that I heard like its about mental peace and wellness that matters, and employees are primary assest and things which made me think WD as company who prioritizes its employes. My point is after 4 rounds and almost a month on interview process a feedback is what candidate deserves to very least.
