Interview
The group interview process typically involves 4 to 8 candidates and lasts around one hour. It usually begins with a brief introduction where you get to meet the other applicants and learn a bit about the role or the organisation. After that, candidates are split into smaller groups to complete a short activity—this might be something like prioritising tasks, responding to a scenario, or solving a problem relevant to the role. Once that’s completed, everyone comes back together for a larger group activity where communication, teamwork, and initiative are assessed. Finally, the panel will often break off to ask individual questions in a more one-on-one format. These questions are usually focused on your background, your interest in the role, and how you handle certain situations in a workplace setting. The structure is designed to assess both collaborative and individual strengths.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
In the group interview, they started by asking each of us to briefly introduce ourselves, including our background and why we were interested in the role. Then, we were given a small group assessment where we had to work together to solve a scenario, like managing a lab scheduling issue or handling a misplaced sample. This part was clearly designed to observe how we communicated, collaborated, and approached problem-solving. After that, we were split into smaller groups for more formal questions with one or two panel members. These individual questions focused on our suitability for the role, asking things like why we applied, how we handle competing deadlines, and examples of working in a team or resolving conflict. It was structured to assess both our interpersonal skills and how we’d perform in a real lab admin setting.

Interview
I had interviews with the data entry and customer care team leaders, who were late and did not apologize. The interview ran over time, and they openly compared my answers to those of other candidates, even criticizing past applicants. Despite asking for references and being promised a response by Wednesday, I only heard back after I had to prompt them via email. Unfortunately, I did not get the job, which was not surprising. What did bother me was when they shared the result, they commented, "We actually had really good candidates this time."
This remark implied that I would have been considered a stronger candidate had the other applicants not exceeded expectations, which was disheartening. During the interview, they frequently compared my responses to those of previous candidates, giving me false hope and often creating an unprofessional atmosphere. For instance, they would recall and compare my answers with those of other candidates. While this could have been a positive interaction had I gotten the job, it felt hasty and inconsiderate given the circumstances.
My suggestion to them would be to maintain professionalism, establish boundaries, and avoid oversharing. It's important to make the interview process a respectful and considerate experience for all candidates.
