      Site Reliability Engineer Interview

      15 Jul 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Veeam Software

      Interview

The interviewer had a DevOps background but was choosen to take interviews for SRE positions. Multiple times I felt knowledge gaps in the interviewer and therefore he was not aware of much of the SRE world things. Dodged that team honestly.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Both interviews were based on DevOps questions and nothing SRE related. No conversation about Toil, Error budgets, troubleshooting, the system design part was DevOps too, I bet he doesnot have much experience with troubleshooting real world distributed systems.

      Site Reliability Engineer Interview

      Anonymous interview candidate

      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Veeam Software in Jun 2025

      Interview

I was contacted by a recruiter on LinkedIn, after which I applied for the position on Veeam's website. This was followed by a Teams interview with the recruiter, who was personable, clear, and friendly. He said the process was simple: a possible interview with the hiring manager, possibly followed by a technical interview, possibly followed by an offer. A few days after my recruiter interview, I was invited to a Teams interview with the hiring manager for the next week. This was a *completely* different experience. While the manager was reasonably friendly, after the requisite "tell me about yourself" question, I suddenly found myself in a technical interview for a job that I hadn't applied for. I felt sandbagged. He appeared to be interviewing for a full-stack DevOps engineer, not an SRE, and didn't seem familiar with the general duties of an SRE. He asked questions about how to troubleshooting problems in a full web stack web environment, with a lot of questions about troubleshooting and configuring Postgres. I gave the full-stack troubleshooting questions my best guesses even though my experience is primarily with microservice-based environments, but I had to admit that I only knew enough about Postgres to do basic administration, not troubleshooting and configuration. There were a few questions about observability and environment management, though it was clear that his knowledge of those areas is somewhat limited. None of the technologies he asked about were in the posted job description. I felt stupid for not knowing the answers he seemed be looking for, and eventually like I dodged a bullet.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

How would you monitor a dev or test environment in comparison to Prod?

      Question 2

How would you apply a change to Postgres in Prod?
