      Online ESL Tutor Interview

      27 Mar 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at VIPKid (New York, NY) in Feb 2016

      Interview

I applied online, they seemed very excited to move forward with the online interview until they saw that I was Black. So, even as a native English speaker with 3 degrees (a master's in education and another in early childhood development), less than an hour later, I received the old 'After review of your qualifications, we have determined that they don't match our needs' email. I had heard that China had quite racist hiring policies, had even been warned about this specific company as well, but I naively assumed that a company that wanted to be viewed as 'global' might want their children to be exposed to the 21st century, which includes English speakers of all races. Boy, was I was wrong, lol. White friends that I sent the job link to were hired, and almost immediately, even with less education and no teaching experience. So if you happen to be white and need a job, go for it. I'm certain that VIPKID will read this review and post fake ones in response, claiming to be black people that they hired. Don't believe it.

Dear Candidate, I'm sorry you had a negative experience. In the interview + demo lesson stage, ESL skills, adaptability and engagement are what we are looking for when evaluating candidates. and/or ethnicity play no role in the recruitment and screening process. We have a very diverse community of teachers. You are welcome to email us to get more feedback about your interview+demo lesson performance. Our email is teachvip@vipkid.com.cn.
