      Junior User Experience Researcher Interview

      6 May 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Mountain View, CA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at UserTesting (Mountain View, CA) in Mar 2014

      Interview

I submitted my application through their site (via Jobvite) and heard back from someone within 24 hours. I had a first interview with someone in the same position that I was applying to. It was relatively casual and conversation-like and regarded my background, interest in the industry, and past research experience. I was then contacted the next day asking that I do two projects. The first was to watch a couple videos and write a sample report focusing on a couple of objectives they outlined-- I was allowed to use any format I wanted. The second was to compare and contrast two "Research plans" for the same product-- no report, just be ready to discuss them. I was then scheduled for a group interview with the Research Director and two other high up Researchers. This interview covered many of the same questions as before. I was then asked to present both of my sample projects using a shared screen. This threw me off a bit because (from the wording of the assignments) I had not formatted my report in a way that was conducive to giving a presentation (it was a report rather than a PPT). I think that had I formatted it differently it would have been much easier to demonstrate my points. The second assignment presentation was better, but they ended up seeing my rather messy notes (again, didn't think I would be asked to do a screen share). By the end of the interview I had the impression I wasn't going to get the position. However they were really friendly and nice and not rude at all. I ended up having to wait 1.5 weeks before getting an email from them saying "No".

      Question 1

What have you been doing to familiarize yourself with current User Research trends? What is the process you would go through (step by step) in developing a research plan with a client through completion?

      Interview

I’ve interviewed twice over the past year for this position and after making it to the “final” interviews, I was ghosted both times. No rejection email, no nothing. Waste of time and energy! There won’t be a third chance from me.

      Interview

It was overall a positive process. Managers were friendly and informative. Amazed at how quickly the entire process went. I also appreciated that everything was dine through Google hangouts. I wasn't required to go in person, I would be relocating so this was awesome. The people are a great indicator of the company, and I got a good vibe from everyone I spoke with.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The first round was just get to know you. Then they asked you to use the service and write up a test report. You also speak to current workers in your position which I found helpful. And then lastly, you interviewed aga in to give your thoughts on the process and your report.
