      Senior Proposal Manager Interview

      26 May 2026
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at UPMC in Mar 2026

      Interview

I couldn’t run away from this company fast enough. I’ve been in the proposal industry close to 20 years and there were red flags at every turn of the interview process. Number 1 - HR was never involved at any stage. A member of the proposal team completed my phone screening and another scheduled my day-long enough with the entire team. Number 2 - Three different team members emphasized how “nights, weekends, and holidays” are standard practice for anyone in the proposal world. Well, they’re not if you have an efficient team and process. When I asked about how many hours a member can be expected to work, I was told by a current team member “Oh, I average 60 to 80 hours a week.” This is for an average-to-below paying role. That tells me the team has no support, has no management, and no process. When I asked another member what surprised her most when she joined the team, she said “That we receive no training at all.” Again, no thank you. Number 3 - UPMC does not value your time. The interview process was one full day (use a day of PTO), then 3 separate writing assignments (assume a half day of PTO), and then an 8-hour writing assignment (another day of PTO). This is not industry standard and is overkill. The first hour of my interview was spent with the hiring manager. She showed me a slide show for 50 minutes and then asked me 1 question. Total waste of time. I was told at the end of my day-long interview I was a “top candidate”. Three weeks later I hadn’t received an assignment yet. In the portal I could see I was still under consideration, but my time wasn’t valued and it was evident this role would be a nightmare. I removed my candidacy and still never heard a word. I’m happy I dodged this bullet.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The Hiring Manager spent 50 minutes showing me a slide show of the company, then asked what my biggest weakness was. She had a full hour to interview me and that’s how she spent her time.
