      Software Developer Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at UK Biobank in Apr 2026

      Interview

A few days back, I had a second-round interview for a Back-End Developer role at UK Biobank. In most interviews I’ve attended in the UK, the process usually begins with a simple greeting to help candidates feel comfortable. I understand this may not be mandatory, but as representatives of an organization, especially in senior roles, a basic level of professionalism and courtesy should be expected. This interview felt very different. Instead of a structured conversation, it started abruptly. When I tried to explain my previous experience, I was repeatedly interrupted and not given the chance to finish my thoughts. This came across as quite rude and dismissive. One of the interviewers had experience in the same tech stack I’ve worked with. He asked what seemed like a straightforward question, and although I answered it, he kept complicating the discussion without clearly explaining what he was expecting. This went on continuously for around 20 minutes, making the interaction feel more like a test of pressure rather than a professional discussion. I was later given feedback that a greater depth of applied experience, particularly in SQL, was expected. However, I didn’t feel I was given a fair opportunity to demonstrate this, as the discussion remained focused on other areas despite my attempts to explain my experience. In the remaining time, they did not explain the role, expectations, or provide any meaningful information about the team or company. I wasn’t even asked if I had any questions. The interview ended abruptly—they simply cut the call without giving me a chance to respond or even say a proper goodbye. I’ve attended many interviews, but this one was a cultural shock. The experience felt unwelcoming and, at times, biased. In the end, I feel it may be fortunate that I was not selected, because it’s difficult to imagine working in an environment where candidates are treated this way.

      Interview

Application, then an online code assessment comprising around 30 short questions, then an in-person test composed of two parts: pair programming and general questions. The pair programming portion was terrible ,I would ask questions and receive little or no response from either interviewer. When I did get an answer it was typically just a "no" with no further explanation or guidance. It felt like the interviewers simply didn't know what pair programming is or how it works

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience, we really appreciate your feedback. It’s helpful to hear your thoughts on the structure of the process, including the different stages like the online assessment and in-person interview. We aim to create a process that gives candidates a fair opportunity to demonstrate their skills in different ways. We’re really sorry to hear that your experience of the pair programming session didn’t meet expectations. That’s certainly not the experience we want candidates to have. Pair programming should be a collaborative and supportive exercise, and it’s important that candidates feel able to ask questions and engage with interviewers. We’re taking this feedback seriously and are continuing to review and improve our interview approach, including how we support and train interviewers to create a more interactive and positive experience. Thank you again for your feedback, it’s invaluable in helping us improve.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on your interview experience with us. We’re sorry to hear that aspects of the process felt challenging or discouraging. Our intention with the timed assessment is to create a consistent and objective way of evaluating core technical skills at an early stage. That said, we recognise that this format may not work equally well for everyone. We do offer reasonable adjustments for candidates who may need additional support, and our assessment platform also provides the option to select a preferred first language. We encourage candidates to make use of these options, and we are always happy to discuss individual needs ahead of the assessment. However, we recognise this may not always be clear or fully address everyone’s experience. We are continuously reviewing our processes to ensure they are as inclusive and accessible as possible, and feedback like yours is invaluable in helping us improve. Thank you again for sharing your experience, and we wish you the very best in your job search.
