I applied in-person. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (Laguna Niguel, CA) in Nov 2015
Interview
First, I turned in my completed application. I checked back two weeks later, they scheduled me to meet with Karl, a mate that initiates the interview process. After a positive interview with Karl, (greatguy) he referred me to the Captain for a final interview. That interview went well, though the Captain was suprised I was there for an interview. He said that very few people get this far in the interview process, and I should consider this. Interview questions were the same as the first (round) leading me to believe I really did catch him off guard. I walked through the interview easily, and the Captain tried to "scare" me off the tedious parts of the job; was I aware of the lifestyle that retail schedules are part of? the less pretty part of the job (cleaning bathrooms, collecting shopping carts, cleaning drains in the refridgeration unit, etc). I was ok with all of it and had performed even less glamourous duties in my previous career. I have extensive customer service experience and am exptremely fond and familiar with Trader Joe's Products. I felt good about our meeting when I left, but definitely did not feel like a "shoe-in". I heard one week later from the Captain that I was not selected for the job. They did not check references with my former employers. I am really disappointed - who wouldn't be? It's a great store with a fabulous crew and I still want to be a part of it. I will apply again.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
What did I like most/least about my last position?
It's two to three interviews, the final with the Captain (or highest manager) of the store. The interviews are largely to get to know your personality and how well you would do at customer service.
The interview process was absolutely wonderful! I didn't feel stressed or nervous and it felt like I was just chatting with a friend! Trader Joes is a great company and the interview was great.
Very chill, asked things a lot of job interviews don't, more personal down to earth questions. Made me feel very comfortable. Professional but also cool vibes from everyone who interviewed me. Went to one interview with mates and another with the captain.
