I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (Saint Louis, MO) in Jul 2013
Interview
I have a friend who has worked for TJ's for over 5 years and he recommended that I apply. Thought I'd be a shoe-in because I've had several years of retail experience and this particular location has hight turnover and "is always hiring". Plus, this particular location is expanding and should be opening in the next month.
Anyway, I walked in with my completed application and had a very upbeat, pleasant chat with the MOD for about 10 minutes. He made some notes on my application and then told me that they would call me to follow-up in three days if they were interested or else they would send me a rejection letter by mail (they didn't use those words). Time passed and I figured that they weren't interested. My friend followed up with me and when I related my experience he told me that his friend who is the main manager at that location had been out of town on vacation and that he'd ring him and ask him to give me an interview.
So they called me back the following week - FYI it is now three weeks since I dropped off the application - and scheduled an interview with me. I went in for the interview and they had double-booked me with someone else. I waited cheerfully and two people interviewed me. All of the questions were straight off of this web site - I had done my homework and was really well prepared. I was cheerful and thought I answered well and thought I had good chemistry with the Mate and the other person, who I think was a Mate-in-training. The interview was extremely brief - twenty minutes! They told me that they'd follow up next week with a phone call for a second interview if they wanted to move forward with me.
So....the next week I got a letter informing me that they had decided to not bring me onto the crew. It was signed by my friend's manager friend. It was dated the day that I interviewed. Totally a WTF moment...

Question 1
Most annoying question - what do you do at work to have fun? I mean, really, how am I supposed to answer this? I am fun and have always had fun at work but I don't have a formula. It's not like I break into song or dance on the floor, or make wisecracks.
The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (Sterling, VA) in Aug 2024
Interview
I was not hired! It was a new store so it was a very competitive position. I was emailed the day after my application, but denied shortly after the call. I am under the assumption that this location prefers experienced people.
I applied in-person. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (Cleveland, OH) in Jul 2018
Interview
Submitted an application in person. The manager who accepted the application asked me about favorite Trader Joe's products. Later received a call asking if would like to interview. Was interviewed by two managers, fairly low key but professional.
I applied in-person. I interviewed at Trader Joe's (New York, NY) in Dec 2017
Interview
Rigorous process. 2 separate interviews first with a manager and the final with the store captain. Overall the process took about 2 weeks. But also took a little bit to hear back from when I dropped off my resume.
