      Tech Art Interview

      9 Jun 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Tonk Tonk Games (Austin, TX)

      Interview

The initial interview was very pleasant, I was told I'd be scheduled for a meeting with the CEO next (that never happened). I was told also I would be receiving an art test that day. I followed up the next day after not receiving it and was told I'd be receiving it shortly. I received the art test two days after that (3 days after the interview). Upon submitting the test I was asked why I was missing a few things that were not explicitly asked for in the test description, with no decision of any kind on my status mentioned in the email. I returned a second submission adding one of the features asked about in the email within 2 hours of receiving it. I received no reply. After not getting any response for a week, I followed up and asked if I was still being considered. I was told the position had been filled. It has been about 3 months and the job is still posted on LinkedIn.

      Question 1

Of the 5 or 6 art tests I've received in my career as a tech artist, this one was the most obscure. The art test consisted of creating a pipeline and a tool with some questionable assets and a few of very broadly defined features in Unity. The entire test description was 1 paragraph so when I say 'broadly defined', I mean it. Requested tool features included saving, loading, placement, editing, and randomization. The suggested time to spend was 8 hours. Perhaps I am naive but I assumed that with such a broad scope what they wanted to see was how much you could do in that amount of time - I was also told to 'just have fun with it'.
