      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      28 Jan 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Dublin, Dublin
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Toast Inc (Dublin, Dublin) in Jan 2022

      Interview

People seemed nice and professional. I sadly had to withdraw from the process due to Hackerrank being used in the screening. For the potential candidates - the use of Hackerrank may be a red flag about a culture, diversity and equality issue. Unlike leetcode or similar software, Hackerrank is prejudicial claiming engineers can only be as good as their mathematical level. I believe engineers are as good as their products, working relationships, achievements, innovation, designs, solutions, values and a team benefits of different backgrounds, different levels of skill and strength. Many of us in the industry feel it is biased/unethical software for interview processes and strongly disagree with it's use in the hiring process (including some of Hackerranks own employees). Its fails to meet the standard of similar and competing software in terms of technical testing and problem solving, and as a learning tool. Their product is very low standard on many levels and crashes frequently so ironically the products failings contradicts their whole argument about mathematicians making great engineers... It does however serve a clear and single purpose of excluding candidates from different backgrounds and/or disabilities which i suspect is where it gained it's support. So i feel the responsible choice is to decline to use it - which unfortunately withdrew me as a candidate for this company. I thanked them for their time, explained i wasn't comfortable with the use of Hackerrank but was open to alternatives. When that was declined, i decided to err on the side of caution of it indicating a cultural issue in that area and not to proceed further.

Thank you for sharing this candid perspective. I am sorry that this was your experience, and I worry there may have been a miscommunication here. During our interview process, we use Hackerrank as a screen sharing tool for live coding exercises. The purpose of this exercise is to help us see how you would work through a technical challenge alongside one of our engineers, so that we can best assess the next steps for our candidates. At Toast, we greatly value different perspectives and are inspired by the uniqueness we all bring to the table. Fostering an inclusive and diverse community is a top priority for all of us. We have a proud engineering culture, which is rooted in strong engineering tenets and values the diverse perspectives that new engineers add to Toast. We always review CVs and any other application material, in case there is a different role within our R&D org that could be a better match. I am grateful for the feedback you've shared here, and will be sure to keep it in mind moving forward. Feel free to reach out to me directly on LinkedIn if you would like to discuss further. - Garreth Woods, Manager, Talent Acquisition

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Toast Inc (Bengaluru) in Apr 2026

      Interview

I don't remember how I applied but I got call from HR, after initial phone screening they gave time slot to choose for interview. 1st round was HLD which was good and I passed. For next round they wanted 3 different slots. 2nd round was DSA which was also good and was on DFS. 3rd round code review which also went well. 4th round I messed up a bit in end but overall it was good. After that they scheduled 5th round and that was managerial round and that was very good. I was hopping for +ve feedback overall but got call from HR that review is avg and they will let me know in some days. After 1 week I followed up but no response and after call they told not selected as review was mixed. If the pas round affect the overall rating then why to give hope. But overall the interview experience was good. Interviewers were very helpful. I would love to apply again in future and would love to work with them.

      Interview

The whole process seemed like a waste of time. When the recruiter initially reached out to me they mentioned that they already had other candidates that passed the first round. Knowing this they scheduled out my first round 3 weeks later. I was really confused by this and emailed to clarify if we were still in alignment since others are further along in the process. They said it was fine since team is slowing down for the holidays. They closed the role the day before my interview. What was the point in stringing me along like that?

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Toast Inc

      Interview

I had a weird interview experience with Toast. Unlike big techs, seems like they follow a yes/no binary template where you are expected to say the exact thing that have in their checklist rather than evaluating candidate’s problem solving, leadership, architecture skills. For example, they don’t care about the code logic, they just want a running code. They don’t care about the optimal system design solution, they want an exact SQL query. May be that is working out for them but that kind of yes/no interview style makes more luck dependent than actual skill evaluation. Good thing is that the recruiter gave a transparent feedback.
