I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Thumbtack (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2017
Interview
First I had lunch with a friend who works at Thumbtack and he told me about the company. Then he referred me to head of the department I would be working in and I had an informal chat with her. Then the formal interview process began. I had a phone screen with the recruiter. Then I had an in-person interview with three different people on the team. They asked for specific examples of past experience doing exactly what I would be expected to do in this role (i.e. they weren't looking for someone who could grow into the role, they were looking for someone who already had years of experience doing this exact role). So it was no big surprise that I didn't get the job because they decided to go with someone who already had SMB PMM experience. The recruiter called on the phone to let me know that I didn't get the job, which I appreciated. Overall I thought the process was professional and I liked all of the people that I met on the team.
Thank you for giving us a chance to meet you. Good luck in your future job search.
