      Ui\Ux Designer Interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Think Company

      Interview

Was a phone screen, 2 interviews, and a take home design test. They didn't have the budget worked out for the role they had open, was told an offer was getting worked out, was ghosted and reached back out to months later about a new role.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Think Company (Philadelphia, PA)

      Interview

I had a 30 minute phone screen with a design lead and then was asked to do a "Think Challenge" to design an app for an invisible service hotel. I spent a ton of time on it, documenting my process through photos and creating a comprehensive presentation to walk through it from start to finish and delivered a polished clickable prototype. I presented to four people of various levels and we had a great discussion afterwards about the app I created and worked through some different scenarios together. I felt like I got positive feedback from the group and got along well with everyone. I ended up not getting the job and felt that their feedback was unhelpful. I'm really not sure what more they expected me to do for a fake project and I used the research I had at hand online to form my assumptions. It didn't sit with me well that they ask people to do 40+ hours of work upfront and I'll never accept an interview request like that again.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How might you design an app for an invisible service hotel, meaning there are no physical staff at the location? Walk us through your process.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your interview experience. We always value the effort candidates put into preparing presentations, however, we don’t expect candidates to put in a high number of hours. We encourage candidates to choose which skills they want to highlight and then allow them to decide the time they want to give. Earlier this year, we updated our interview process to provide all applicants the choice between a design exercise or a formal presentation of past work. If candidates choose to present past work, the time commitment to prepare is typically minimal and similar to walking us through a project in their portfolio. This choice between two approaches allows candidates to craft their story in the manner that works for them, while still giving us rich insight into their process and approach to the work we do.
