I applied online. I interviewed at The Reading Foundation (Toronto, ON) in Apr 2022
Interview
First received a phone call, to get to know the company and answer any important questions like availability, and why you want to work here. Then proceeded to the next phase, the interview. This was a virtual interview and quite an unusual interview format.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
1. Asked about your knowledge of the company, your experiences, and a few questions to get to know you better like your favourite book, your impression of school, and why?
2. Asked to simulate how you'd interact with a child by playing a 'getting a car out of a parking lot/car park puzzle' game, and asked to give instructions, explain and how you'd break that game down for a child.
3. Asked to 'segment' or sound out the syllables of a list of real and made-up words
4. Asked to spell a list of 40 words
5. Given a math word problem that involved subtraction
Overall, quite a straightforward, somewhat easy informal interview. It seemed a lot better and different than other regular interviews. Throughout the interview, we were able to have a pleasant conversation with a lot of back and forth dialogue, much better than a very formal interview.
The interviewer was kind and personable. The interview was about an hour long but made sense since the job would require working with vulnerable populations. Overall it was fair and thorough. Make sure to come well prepared with a notebook and pen.
