      Artist Hospitality Interview

      2 Sept 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Menlo Park, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at The Guild Theatre (Menlo Park, CA)

      Interview

The 2 owners who interviewed me were initially friendly. They both run and own the venue together but the older guy is more in charge. They gave me a short tour of the venue before taking me down to the dirty, green room for the interview. The younger guy did most of the interview and was very professional. The older guy sat and listened, asked questions here and there, and gave occasional comments (sometimes rude). At the very beginning of the interview, the older guy mentioned they dislike the music taste of the rich people in the Menlo Park area where their venue is located and called them pretentious. When asked later what my last concert was, I answered that it was an stadium show for a large, legendary rock artist that I love. The older guy snickered, said something a little rude, and they gave each other a look. The older guy also didn't seem to like the fact that I worked at the Shoreline Amphitheatre even though he had worked there in the past and said something about sell out artists. There aren't many venues in the South Bay and being in my 20's, I personally enjoyed working there. People have to start somewhere and that was the best option to gain experience, especially right after the Covid pandemic. They also didn't like that I had never seen a show at The Guild which would've been understandable if the venue hadn't just opened about 6 months before the interview and right after the pandemic. Even before the end of the interview, it was clear that they weren't going to hire me, not based on my experiences, skills, and connections but based on just a few artists I had seen live recently and the venue I worked at that they didn't like. I thought that made them just as pretentious as the rich people in Menlo, if not more. I understand they book certain kinds of artists which is common, but just because I listen to larger artists doesn't mean I don't like the artists they book, in fact, many of the artists that have played at The Guild were ones I liked.
