I actually had 3 interviews and a personality test. The first interview was over the phone because I lived in Dallas and the position was in Austin. It went great. I took a personality test and they like what they saw.
A week later, I arrived at the office and I had an interview with the CFO, Vice President, and a digital marketing manger. Everything went fine and they called the other 2 people to tell them that they liked me. I later met the VP of Digital Marketing and the CEO at a hotel because they were attending a SXSW conference. We had lunch all together to discuss my responsibilities and future plans for this position. Finally, we came to the discussion about my salary and that's when things took a turn.
I was offered $45k for this position. I was taken aback because this was an inadequate salary when compared to the other offers that have courted me. Taking into account the responsibilities, the years of experience I had, and the rising cost of Austin, I knew this was not the job for me. Once I told them that the bare minimum for this job and what it entails is at least 60K, They bumped up the offer to exactly that. It immediately raised a red flag. The CEO upped the ante and offered me $62,050.00 if I had taken the job right then and there but he overplayed his hand. A $22,000 raise in a split second. Only because I had a number I wanted to reach. I knew if I took this job, I could never trust my boss not to take advantage of me if I didn't know any better.
Overall, this wasn't a bad interview and I hope they do well but that last couple of minutes left a bad taste in my mouth. The good news is that I got a free meal over the ordeal but using a sick day to drive halfway across the state was ultimately a waste of time. I have myself to blame for not asking about salary sooner.
