1st interview: Call with the hiring manager (with whom I was going to work) went well. There was obvious compatibility between my experience and the role. The hiring manager was friendly, engaged and supportive throughout the process. Take-home assignment: It was a huge (unpaid) project that was supposedly estimated at 5 hours, but it took much more time to deliver anything of real value. I also completed all the nice-to-haves except one, because the rest of the assignment took two full workdays (excluding presentation preparation + README). I even used their stack to make it easier for them to review, even though I don’t use that programming language in my everyday work. 2nd interview: Presentation of the take-home assignment to the hiring manager and CTO (50 minutes). It went very well and I could tell they were impressed. They learned things from my assignment that they didn’t know. I also covered the additional features and possible architecture of a production-ready solution and addressed everything, so there weren’t many follow-up questions. 3rd interview: With the CEO (30 minutes). This was practically a hazing exercise. The CEO was dismissive and sarcastic from the start, asked to see my assignment again out of nowhere, acted technical in half the interview and not technical in the other half, and sometimes didn’t seem to understand English. I stayed professional and positive and performed under the pressure of the surprise presentation despite technical difficulties. Ironically, I was rejected for “communication” reasons, which made absolutely no sense given the quality of my work and performance. Also, both of the founders seemed detached and showed no connection or passion for their own product, but still demand employees to work overtime and even on weekends. I deeply regret the huge amount of time I invested in interviewing with them. Maybe this review will help you avoid this company. There are other companies you can join and grow, where you will also be treated with respect.
