      Senior Graphic Designer Interview

      24 Oct 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at TAVHealth (Austin, TX) in May 2017

      Interview

About a week after applying, I received an email request to create an infographic within a few work days. A few days after submission, I was contacted by the above HR person to schedule a phone interview (I was applying from out of state; or maybe this is their first interview step regardless). I had the first interview with the VP of HR. Later that night I was contacted again to schedule an interview with the person who would be my supervisor. She was leaving for vacation and wanted to talk before then, so we spoke the next day. A day after that, I was contacted again with an offer to fly out and interview in person a couple weeks later. They paid for most of my trip, and had me come out from Friday through Monday. The idea was to interview on Friday with a few staff, spend the weekend exploring (I had been to Austin before, but they thought I could maybe take a look at apartments for myself and my family in preparation for a move), and then return for more interviews Monday before flying out. All but one of the interviews at the office were in person, with the exception of a video conference with the department VP on the West Coast. They were all informal conversations and none felt canned. The video chat was positioned strangely and it was hard to see and feel I was being seen, as well as the usual lag and call quality. I love to work hard. But I know it's not everything in life. After their job listing and website touted work-life balance, I asked each interviewer questions in order to check. The general impression I received was that most were relatively new and had been working long hours since hire. They were also moving from a space in NW Austin to a location further west. Not ideal for anyone living in old/south Austin. About a week later, I was told they went with the other person they were considering. This person was a native and was younger with less experience. It is what it is. You get what you pay for. I wish them all the best.

      Interview questions [2]

      Question 1

Describe a time at work you failed. What did you do to correct it and bounce back?
      Answer question

      Question 2

Not really a question, but they are big on "chemistry" of a candidate with the existing team.
