      I interviewed at Statistics Canada

      Interview

I applied online and was contacted a few weeks later for a written test followed by a panel interview. The overall process was organized, but a bit slow, which seems pretty normal for government hiring. Communication was professional throughout. The written portion focused on basic analytical skills, attention to detail, and interpreting data. The interview itself was with a small panel and lasted around 45 minutes to an hour. Most of the questions were behavioral, such as describing a time I worked under pressure, handled a difficult team situation, or explained technical information to a non-technical audience. There were also a few questions about Excel, data analysis, and how I would approach working with confidential information. The interviewers were friendly but formal. They seemed to care a lot about structure in answers, so using the STAR method helped. I’d recommend preparing examples that show teamwork, organization, communication, and problem-solving, along with a basic understanding of Statistics Canada’s role and values.
