      Conference Producer Interview

      9 Nov 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Smart Grid Forums (London, England)

      Interview

It consisted of a first Teams call with Mandana, the CEO of the company. She asked me some general questions about my background and interests. Why I thought I was a good candidate... typical stuff, but also some very personal questions regarding experiences from the past. After that, I had a second interview through teams with her and the marketing manager, where they asked me again some more personal questions regarding how i had gained experience for different skills. The first 2 interviews were a total of 90 minutes. Just to get to know me. I was given a third interview in the office, where they were going to give me an assessment to perform. They gave me a set of instructions and an hour to do it. It was a very stressful task. I was left alone in a communal space where people where speaking loudly on the phone. Not great for concentration. The assessment involves reading an article on a topic I had never heard about before, and create a one-day conference programme, with 4 session title, each with 3 bullet points explaining what the session would include. After that, I had to write a promotional copy in the style of a marketing email. It was not enough time to familiarise myself with the topic, with the writing style, and to come up with 4 sessions. It was a role for graduates, and to perform that assessment, someone definitely needed previous experience on creating conference content. I lost my time, they lost their time. I'm confident with my writing skills, I am good at communicating, and I still did terrible at the interview.

Thanks for your feedback. You did well to get to the third stage, which is designed to filter in only the most suitable candidates and ensure their full alignment with the role and our culture. Only about 20% of candidates who make it to third interview are successful. 70% are not successful but take away important lessons from the critique that help them fine-tune their job search and their approach to interview, and 10% do not complete the task nor stay for the critique. All of these outcomes are fine, as we are searching for the right fit for the role, the team, the company, and the long term. Best of luck with your search.
