      Email Designer Interview

      9 Dec 2019
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at ShopRunner (New York, NY) in Nov 2019

      Interview

This company does not respect the time of its applicants. Small note - ShopRunner does not have a designated NYC office - they're located in a WeWork co-op space. With this in mind, good luck. After passing the two rounds of phone interviews, I flew out to the New York City office and was led to a conference room. After a pleasant introductory interview with the first ShopRunner employee, I was told the next three interviews would be conducted in 30-minute increments via video call to their Chicago and Conshohocken offices. The first interviewer made sure I was logged into the video call on a company laptop, and left the room. And that is precisely where things went downhill. I waited. And waited. Keep in mind that this individual interview was supposed to be 30 minutes long. After 15 minutes of no one logging into the video call, I left the interview room to find Interviewer #1 to see what was happening. She was nowhere to be found. I immediately found the first con of working at a WeWork co-op space - the actual work area (away from the shiny lounges you see advertised) were impossible to navigate. There was no map, no guide - just hallway after hallway of glass-boxed rooms. I was walking through what was essentially an endless mirror-maze of office space hoping to find the ShopRunner room, but to no avail. I returned to the interview room and emailed the recruiter to notify him I was still waiting for my interview to start (the recruiter had not given me any contact numbers). I waited. The recruiter sent off an email to alert my interviewers. Then I waited some more. Finally, I had enough. I got up to use the bathroom, did one last loop around WeWork labyrinth to attempt to find a door or window labeled ShopRunner, failed to do so, and returned to the interview room to collect my things. Like clockwork, interviewer #2 FINALLY logged in, a whopping 25 minutes late. To make matters worse, I had to sit there and watch her sprint down hallways at her own location, looking for a room to interview in. When she finally sat down, she was out of breath, and I barely had time to introduce myself. Then to add insult-to-injury, she then proceeded to cut into Interviewer #3's time. I couldn't believe it. Completely and utterly unprofessional. After the three video interviews, there was another in-person interview, followed by a whiteboard exercise. I was told I would hear back early the following week. After not hearing back, I emailed the recruiter to ask about my application status and was told I did not get the job because they were "looking for someone who closer matched the requirements." I would not recommend interviewing with this company.

First of all, we're sorry to hear this was your experience. We have a small office in NY which is in a WeWork, and it's great for lots of things including being a part of a bigger NYC tech community. That said, it can be challenging from a logistics perspective for interviews. We've now learned from the feedback and experience. We truly value the time of all of our applicants and employees which is why we strive to have a tightly operated interview process. It's clear in this instance, we had some challenges. We wish you the best in wherever you go next.
