      Machine Learning Engineer Interview

      4 Apr 2019
      Anonymous employee
      San Francisco, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Samsara (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2019

      Interview

Recruiter reached out to me through a resume board. After a phone screen with the recruiter, I went through two technical phone screen rounds. The first was a coding challenge. And the second focused on previous projects and on behavorial. Afterwards, they flew me from New York to San Francisco on the on-site. First the recruiter gave me a tour. Their office is in a newly renovated building in SF. With the company's fast expansion, they're taking up a few more floors of the building. The office layout is very open and modern, with an assortment of snacks, drinks, and coffee. Since Samsara also builds its own hardware, I could see circuit boards and open wires of hardware components on people's desks. This really reminded me of MIT. My onsite interviews actually started with a product demo. The company really cares that the candidates get a good sense of what they're building. It's state of the art truck fleet and production line monitoring hardware and software with computer vision. Then we moved onto coding, system design, machine learning case, and manager wrap-up. One thing worth mentioning was the lunch. You'll sit down with an employee for lunch, but he/she will not submit an evaluation about you. One entire section of one of the floors is the caffeteria which seats probably 150-200 people. They cater lunch and dinner everyday. What caught my eyes was just the energy of the place. Lots of young people at this place. And people were laughing - it seemed that they really liked being around each other. The highlight of the lunch was when my lunch buddy pointed out to me the CEO, who was wearing a hoodie and on the phone by the fridge. He looked very humble and unassuming. You wouldn't know he's the CEO unless someone pointed him out to you, yet he already sold a startup for more than 1 billion and Samsara is worth more than 3 billion, which is exactly why this scene impressed me. During the offer stage, the recruiting team and the hiring manager were very patient and understanding because I had other onsite scheduled. And their offer was very competitive with the other big tech companies and unicorn startups.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Samsara (Toronto, ON) in Nov 2024

      Interview

4 rounds in total, hr screening, technical screening, virtual on site ~3 hours. HR screening was straightforward, technical screening was problem solving with your preferred language, not leetcode style, but something related to their business logic. Virtual onsite was three rounds, two system design related and one final behaviour round with the hiring manager. Throughout the process, the recruiter guided through via sending emails about any updates and confirmation for the upcoming interviews. I think I did well overall, the first design round was about walking through an application I worked on previously, but when they decided to reject, they said I didn't pass the first design interview, which I got a bit confused and the recruiter asked me to ask for more info for another person in the hr team and I didn't get any feedback eventually while I did put lots of effort into preparing for the interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - walk through a previous ML related project you worked on (1st design round) - design a system / application based on the requirement (2nd design round)

      Interview

One of the stupid interview ever. Its 45 minute coding interview from a very junior engineer, Asked me to write C++ with couple of classes. Able to write it. Then got a rejection within couple of hours. There is no single question on Machine Learning. This folks seriously don't know how to take interviews. Avoid this company.
