I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Rapyuta Robotics (Tokyo) in Oct 2023
Interview
The interview process over 5 weeks. There were 4 rounds + a briefing call. In the first round, they asked me about React and JavaScript stuff, and also which tech I'd use for a project they showed me. In round 2, there was a coding question based on JavaScript currying. The third round was about designing frontend systems. Round 4 was with a manager who asked general questions, like how I deal with conflicts. They also threw in some questions about completing number series, a puzzle, and a tricky one about figuring out the Earth's circumference without knowing the radius. The overall experience was good. Right from the start, they told me the salary would be between 7M to 8M yen, which is the usual pay in Tokyo for a mid-level frontend role. After each technical round, the recruiter said I had a good shot at getting 8M. And I was super excited for the role. But when they made the job offer, they suddenly lowered the salary by 30% to around 5.5M yen. (Yeah! it was super weird) And I had to reject the offer as it was close to my current salary in PPP terms. Maybe it's the current market condition, as a lot of developers are out there, ready to work for a low salary. And I never bothered to ask the reason!!! Even though everyone I talked to was nice, I think the company shouldn't change the salary like that. It makes it hard to gain trust even if I had accepted the offer. Market conditions might be tough now, but if they want to keep good employees, they should stick to the usual pay standards for roles like mid-level frontend positions and changing the range was not a good move. But on the bright side, I learned a lot while preparing for the interviews and during the interviews.
