      Financial Controller Interview

      29 Apr 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Railsware

      Interview

The second step is to test candidate technical skills and knowledge of some xls formulas. There is Gsheet based set of taks whis are pretty interesting, especially these with regex formulas. I actually enyoyed completing this and I had some fun with some brain breakers there. Unfortunatelly feedback after completion was so to say RIDICULOUS and unfortunatelly for them I cannot add the statement "In my opinion". It was illogical in every maner. I wont get in to the details not to spoil this "Beatifull" tool :) Just mention one think - it doesnt matter if you are able to solve the problem... you need to do it in only and just only specific way or use specific tool, even if the same tool giev other option to cope with certain thing.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Lets say you have database and you have some inactive rows and rows which are empty apart from these with the data - regular situation. RW is telling to to get rid of blanks and inactive rows from the DB for the sake of preparation of data for further analysis (and this is the right thing to do of course). In the feedback they are getting back to you that you did no include the rows marked as inactive in the sorce data... WTF?

Good day! We appreciate your willingness to share feedback about our recruitment process. And we are glad to hear that our test task was challenging and interesting for you. Thanks again for the time you spent on completing it. We will try to address some of your concerns listed here. Hopefully, this will provide a bit more insights. The task is designed in Google Sheets as we are using this tool in our day-to-day work and finances are not an exception. GSheets uses almost the same logic as Excel, so switching to a new tool should not be a problem (especially with the list of tutorials we provide together with the test task). And if you join us you will have to do it anyway, as well as learn 10+ other tools we use. This task also helps us evaluate the candidate's learning speed. From our experience, we saw a few different solutions for each point stated in the instruction. Our key target was to test how you manage data and make sure important parts are not missing. We've also added a point with a few rows without data, but with an active status. As you have correctly mentioned, this is a common case. An example of such a situation is when a new person joins but does not provide data, and we need to request it. Our key criterion was to make sure you add all active records (even those without data). But there might have been a miscommunication between you and us at the feedback stage. We are truly sorry for that. Such a review gives us more insights into how we can improve our feedback to candidates. We will continue polishing our approach.
