      Software Engineer Interview

      2 Mar 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Berlin
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at PlaytestCloud in Mar 2020

      Interview

The hiring process consists of: -one 30-min interview with each of the 2 co-founders -two 30-min interview with the developers for some overall technical questions -1 code challenge in pair programming; the climate was very good, and the other developer didn't put pressure on me and was very supportive. The code challenge was not so hard, and you could use your favorite programming language. In the end, there was a paid 5h trial day and I have had the occasion to work in pair programming in real bug-fixing. Someone might say the process is long, but I think PlaytestCloud just wants to be sure to select the right candidates, as a growing company! And I would definitely say the process wasn't heavy at all!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked questions about the background experiences as a developer and the challenges you had faced in the past. Some other questions were about problem-solving applied to the PlaytestCloud business.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at PlaytestCloud (Berlin) in Feb 2020

      Interview

Two talks into a coding challenge which was live and against-the-time algorithm challenge in a code collaboration tool with no linting, auto completion, or any actual IDE features. If this is the day to day work activity at the company, you know that you will want to change companies to an actual developer job and not "solve copy paste algorithm challenges that Microsoft asked in 1990 during whiteboard interview in 15 minutes" type of amateur start up

Thank you for your review. I’m sorry that you had a bad experience with the coding test. We do believe that a one hour long live test is the most respectful when it comes to the candidates’ time. However, we are aware that some people prefer other types of technical interviews. Going forward, we’ll look into providing a take-home exercise as an alternative to the live coding test. I also want to thank you for the feedback on the tool we’re using for the coding interview (Coderpad.io). You’re right that it would be ideal to use a fully-fledged IDE and linter. However, as the end result is usually around 20 lines of code, we think it’s more important to use a tool that offers a large choice of programming languages and that can be easily accessed with just a browser. We are not looking for perfectly linted code in this test - we’ll try to give better context around that going forward. And of course, we use proper tools for doing our day-to-day work. - Marvin (Co-founder)
