I applied online. I interviewed at PayPal (Chicago, IL) in Mar 2021
Interview
The first two interviews were casual conversations with individuals the candidate's role would interact with frequently. The last interview was more like a half day series of interviews starting with a portfolio review. It may sound overwhelming to go through a half day interview process, but it was not overwhelming at all. I was regularly informed between interviews on what was to come, so I could be fully prepared. I knew who I would be talking to and was encouraged to check out their LinkedIn profiles. The portfolio review could be as formal or as casual as I wanted to make it. They understood that most designers that are good at what they do often don't have time to regularly update their online portfolios. That wasn't an issue at all. They were actually quite happy to see what I'd been working on most recently and were fine with me pulling up older documents from past positions. They were mostly interested in learning about my thought process. Everyone I interviewed with seemed exceptionally competent and generally friendly. Aside from the time needed to go through the process, there was no unnecessary pressure. They didn't put me through a brainstorming exercise or any kind of test. Overall, I found the interview process generally pleasant and sincerely appreciated the constant communication and updates between steps.

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at PayPal (San Jose, CA) in Jun 2018
Interview
I had a 30 minute call with the Hiring Manager. I was asked to come onsite to interview with a few members of the team I would be working with. I met for 30 minutes with the Hiring Manager, 30 minutes with the Product Manager (answered some hypothetical questions, 30 minutes with Engineering Team Lead, 30 minutes with another UXer on the Team, 30 minutes with Hiring Manager and 2 Designers to give my presentation. As Hiring Manager was walking me to the Lobby, I was enthusiastically told that there would be next steps as all of the feedback had been very positive. I got the contract.
