      Associate Consultant Interview

      26 Sept 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Burlington, MA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Merck KGaA (Burlington, MA) in Sept 2024

      Interview

The whole process took 1 month (4 weeks). Applied online, got a response a week later from a recruiter for a call. Was normal chitchat call going through the application. A week later I was abruptly informed that there is a case interview in 2 days and I have to prepare for it ( A major miscommunication from their part). The interview was virtual composed of simple Behavioral (what is your biggest achievement, why consulting) and Business case (Market entry from LBS case book 2011 [dating app market entry case), which was followed by simple market sizing and exhibit analysis. A week later I was informed I am progressing to the final round, which is on-site, and told us there will be an excel/powerpoint component to it. The on-site interview was one of the most hectic disorganized experiences I have had. They created what it seemed to be one big case, with different interviewers rotating and asking portions of it with a behavioral part [STRUCTURING, BRAINSTOMRING, QUAT] . The case itself was fine, the main problem was the excel/Powerpoint, the wanted me to do so much data analysis in 15 minutes! [creating a pivot table, getting the client data organized and figuring out the main takeaways] then from that making a powerpoint [3 slides] to present in 10 minutes or so. I didn’t do well at all in that portion, and felt frustrated with the time being this short, and them being vague of what they are looking for to begin with. Their was a meeting with the US head inhouse consulting, it was a good meeting, even though I didn't get the behavioral questions [tell me about a time you failed in a project and how did you contribute to its failing]. The interviewer didn't seem to be convinced of me staying in the firm for a longer term or that I am a good fit! which was surprising to me giving that I was invited to the FINAL INTERVIEW! Got a generic rejection letter 24 hours later, with ZERO feedback. the problem here was the amount of time wasted, plus the lack of any feedback or guidance through the process, in addition of everything being last minute and not giving anytime or criteria to be considered.
