      Senior Engineering Manager Interview

      24 Jun 2015
      Anonymous employee
      Palo Alto, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Medallia (Palo Alto, CA) in Jun 2015

      Interview

I was approached by a Medallia recruiter. She asked a lot of very probing, very well-crafted questions about my background and cultural fit. From there, we coordinated a phone screen with another engineering manager who asked me further questions about my technical and managerial background and provided me with further details on the role. After that, there were two on-site interviews. The first was a discussion with several managers, including my eventual manager, to probe into further aspects of my background and fit for the company. They were very open and forthcoming with information, and it was a very natural conversational tone. The second interview was a series of "challenges", which were structured as case studies that I needed to analyze and present findings about. The case studies were well-crafted and very topically-relevant. They gave me about a week to prepare the case studies, making it very low-pressure, and provided several check-in points during that period to allow me to ask questions. All in all, it was one of the most pleasant, professional, and well-executed interview processes that I have ever experienced. The Medallia team has really focused on making it a great process, and it shows.

      Palo Alto, CA
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Medallia (Palo Alto, CA) in Oct 2015

      Interview

I was interviewed for Sr Engineering Manager though my experience was Director of Engineering .Interview was 5-6 hours .Outcome was negative . - As a women in tech I feel women are not given enough opportunities to continue trend upwards and this was another company with same trend.Position was given to a male candidate who was claimed to be an exact match .Eventhough I had a perfect GPA and overwhelming recommendations from people who worked under and above me about my excellence as an Engineer .Medallia Evaluation was contradictory even though there wasn't much technical questions . I Was not a technical fit which is unfortunate.. - I was interviewed for 5-6 hours for a negative outcome .Questions were repetitive .Schedule didn't match the one send in email and interviews were late .I was asked the same question over and over .Some interviewers were late .Could this have been a panel interview where they could've decided on the same outcome in one hour ? - Rejection Reason was conveyed as there was an exact match candidate and I was send a wine bottle compliment .Even my 11 year old asked mom could they 've asked you to come in after the exact match candidate was accepted/rejected ? Rejection Reason didn't seem a good one . Overall my experience was pleasant and none differ from other tech companies who interview women for positions but reluctant to hire them in leadership positions like Sr Director of Engg. Medallia was good in some areas like communication the rejection reason in person .Companies like Facebook don't even consider accomplished women engineers for phone interviews I don't think environment for qualified women in tech is changing anytime soon

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I regret that our interviewers arrived late and that our process is long. We are trying to streamline it but, because we believe that hiring is one of the most important things we do, we invest the time necessary to make better decisions. Mostly, as a female co-founder, I am saddened by your comments about possible gender bias. Gender should never be a factor in a hiring decision and no candidate should feel that it was. In your case, I can say what was shared with you previously: while the position had not been filled at the time you interviewed, the candidate in final round was also female. I’m sorry you got the impression that your gender affected the final outcome in any way. I do agree with you that there is a gender gap problem generally in Silicon Valley: female engineers constitute less than 15% of total engineering staff and an ever lower percentage of engineering leadership. To help address the problem, Medallia is hosting an event on deprogramming gender bias in the workplace on Thursday, November 5th at 6pm at our offices. The event will feature an unconscious bias workshop, which provides not only compelling insights but also immediate action steps to make our workplaces more inclusive and diverse. We'll also host a panel discussion with some extraordinary senior engineering leaders: Marianna Tessel (SVP Engineering, Docker), Kaaren Hanson (VP Design, Medallia), Nandini Ramani (VP of Engineering, Twitter), and Keith Winstein (professor of Computer Science, Stanford). Given your passion for this topic, I hope you can join us. Thank you again for your feedback (and your passion for women in engineering). If you have any additional insights, please email me at amy.pressman@medallia.com.

      Senior Engineering Manager Interview

      11 Jun 2015
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Palo Alto, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Medallia (Palo Alto, CA)

      Interview

A head hunter found me. The process started with a phone interview with the hiring manager. It went well. I was asked to go onsite. The onsite took 6 hours. I think I got good rapport with most folks, except with the hiring manager. It was rather unfortunate. The frustrating thing is that it took 6 hours of my time and Medallia didn't bother to give me a response afterwards.

I'm sincerely sorry we failed to give you a response. That is not our protocol. I would be frustrated too, especially after you invested so much time in us. I followed up with the recruiting team to see if we can figure out what happened. If you have any additional insights please email me at amy.pressman@medallia.com.
