Interview
Did not actually get to the interview stage due to a very unprofessional experience with the administration. Here’s what happened: I work with a recruiting agency that’s based in central China and has good reviews and hard working agents. My agent contacted me saying that the admins wanted my WeChat directly which is unusual when working with an agency. Their HR had said that they would not allow my agent to join our interview sessions which they normally do to help with the process and take notes. Anyway, I have very short and unprofessional messages from their administration and they said they wanted to interview me right away with no delay. And like a dummy even tho it was almost midnight where I was, I said ok let’s have the interview in an hour. They changed the time to 11:45 pm which was fine. And right after I agreed to that they changed it to 12:15 pm. Now, I’m used to staying up late to deal with international interviews. But theyvthen decided not to send me our zoom link via WeChat where we had been messaging up until then. They emailed me which I wasn’t checking because I was waiting on his WeChat message (they gave absolutely no indication that they were going to email me at all). A half hour later I message them to see what’s up since I was waiting on our meeting. I didn’t see their email until forty five minutes after our scheduled time (1am at this point for me). I responded on their email and on WeChat again to confirm that I was still waiting for them to respond. They had sent the link on the email at 12:17 so I joined that but of course they were not there. I then finally got a response on WeChat that said they prefer email as it’s “more professional” but had never given me their email to begin with so how was I to know? At that point I asked if they still wanted to do the meeting and they said they’d be unavailable until after four their time which was four a.m. my time. I said that wouldn’t work for me since I had already stayed up late and they were unwilling to be cooperative at that point. I made a point to inform them that it was not right to expect a candidate to read their minds and wait on an email when we had only communicated via WeChat up to that point. That’s when they said he preferred email because it’s more professional. Then I told him they should have said so in their initial messages to me. They then ended the conversation and I messaged them back to not bother trying to message me again. In my mind, if the recruiting process is that unprofessional and outrageously disorganized, then I can’t imagine what working for this company would possibly be like. Nothing good. There’s better offers out there in other schools run by native Chinese administrators anyway.
The process was the straightforward and simple. I really the process. They helped answer questions about moving to China, and they were very responsive. Their questions were very thoughtful, and overall easy to answer. They want to make sure you’re a competent teacher who can work abroad.
