      Online ESL Teacher Interview

      I interviewed at Magic Ears

      Interview

I applied through their website and sent in my recorded demo. I was quickly invited for a trial demo session with someone from the company. The interviewer emailed me to schedule an appointment, her email was full of typos and grammatical errors. I researched into how to give a "perfect" trial demo by learning from mentors/referees and by practicing over and over before going into it. I learned ahead of time that: 1) the interviewer would critique me on the spot if I were not performing to their expectation, and 2) from their company youtube video, they promised that applicants who fail their first trial demo would get unlimited number of times to retry. I met up with the interviewer in May 2021. She was someone from their head office who spoke terrible English. She mumbled most of the time and I had to politely ask her to repeat herself in order to understand what she was trying to say. I did a great trial demo because she didn't intervene to critique me other than that one time when she asked me to click on the button to "share screens" with her. At the end of the demo, she asked me to confirm my personal info, contact info and also asked me how many classes I've taught at my other ESL company. When I told her that I have taught over 11,000 classes in the past 4 years, she told me that it was very impressive and asked me to go into my existing company's teaching portal right away to make a video to show the 11,000 classes as proof. She said she needed it to determine how much to pay me. I honestly thought that I landed the job. Well, apparently NOT! I was rejected AND I was NOT given the promised "unlimited" number of retries. I messaged my interviewer for an explanation but never heard back. I found a mentor/referee who was willing to help me. She asked to see my initial recorded demo and said that she thought it was good. She asked me to reapply again. I reapplied with a different email and submitted the same recorded demo which they had approved just 5 days ago, and guess what, they rejected it! Where is the consistency? My mentor told me that they want teachers with neutral North American accent. Well, I grew up in Canada and speak with a neutral N.A. accent. However, I am Chinese Canadian, not the type of "North American" that they perceive. This is a racist company with a toxic corporate culture.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked me to send them proof of the number of classes that I taught at my other company so that they could decide how much to pay me. The trial demo interview went smoothly with no critique but they rejected me for no reason.

      Interview

The hiring process follows a very similar online format to many other online ESL companies. The initial interview was very quick and my interviewer was extremely energetic and was looking for exaggerated use of TPR.
