I applied in-person. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Los Angeles County Assessor (Los Angeles, CA) in Jul 2015
Interview
Test of math and English skills and section on spatial perception. Math was probably 8th grade (included word problems), English comprised reading comprehension and word usage. The next interview was fairly easy, and the following interview was equally as easy. Make sure you can bring in personal examples of how you work with public.

Question 1
Have you dealt with difficult people? How did you handle it?
I applied in-person. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Los Angeles County Assessor (Los Angeles, CA) in Oct 2011
Interview
Two man interview. One played good cop one played bad cop. I guess to see how you react to angry taxpayers. Asked questions about my educational background and job experience. Asked questions on how I would handle various situations that involved customer service type problems. Interview was very relaxed but at one point the bad cop interviewer seemed to get angry at one of my responses but I did not react at all which was probably what they were looking for. If I had responded defensively or angrily I don't think I would have passed the interview.
