When can you start?

They asked me what is my long term plan, e.g. 5 years later. I said I would like to gradually move into a project manager role once I am technically competent. The response from the project manager present in the interview was a bit surprising, he says himself is a project manager, and he does not foresee there is a need for this role unless he leaves.
