It did not follow the standard academic hiring process. My first interview was face-to-face since I was a local candidate. I went in very well prepared and with an open mind. The best thing about the experience was the campus; it is gorgeous.
I arrived 10 minutes early. Only the head of the search committee was there promptly, all others seemed to trickle in a few minutes after or as they pleased.
The head of the search committee, before the rest arrived, initiated a casual conversation with me in which he mentioned his backround, how lived in Florida when it was segregated and how it was so much better there back then, when "blacks literally lived on the other side of the tracks" (said in a nostalgic tone). Don't get me wrong, living and teaching in the south, I am more than accustomed to hearing my fair share of bigotry, but I have 0 interest in working for someone who would hire a professor with such opinions.
I proceeded with the interview as a practice run for the two I had 2 later that week. The search committee was cordial, but they seemed very traditional and rote-learning, where retention and not the student as an individual was the main focus.
