      Junior Javascript Developer Interview

      2 Jul 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Vancouver, BC
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Later (Vancouver, BC) in May 2020

      Interview

The interview process starts with a phone screen with an external recruiter. It was a 15-minute call asking me standard behavioral questions (e.g. Why Later? Why you? etc.) After progressing through the initial stage, I was given a technical exercise to complete. With the job being for a Javascript developer position, the task was to fix some bugs in the dummy Instagram application they had. The dummy application uses the Ember framework (which I had no experience with before this exercise) but was able to understand it fairly quickly and complete the exercise. The final stage was an interview over Zoom that consisted of two parts. The first part was a 1-to-1 interview, who again asked some behavioral questions to see if I would be a good culture fit. I found this stage a little disheartening, the interviewer clearly had no interest in my answers, would cut me off early, and generally treated the interview as more of a box-ticking exercise. The second stage was a lot more interesting and relaxed - I was interviewed by two of the engineers at Later. They asked me some technical questions which were then followed by a code walkthrough where they presented a problem that I would have to solve in real-time. One of the engineer's shared their screen, and I was asked to instruct her on what code to write and to explain my thought process at the same time. They also had Google open in a window next to the code editor, which I was free to use whilst walking them through the code which I found helpful, and a more realistic way of tackling a coding exercise. Overall the process was professional and slick, but I was disappointed not to get the job. Considering I got to the final stage, I was hoping to perhaps get some feedback on why I did not receive an offer, but the recruiter never replied - pretty harsh in my opinion!

We appreciate your honesty on both the positives and negatives, and will definitely be taking this feedback and applying it to our process moving forward. We do our best to provide tangible and constructive feedback to candidates who request it and make it past the project stage of our interview process, so to not receive a follow up after your final interview is something we will work to ensure does not happen again in the future. Application

      Interview

Entirely automated for as far as I made it. They sent me a link to a 30-minute Hackerrank test which had two questions: 1 technical and 1 subjective. The first question was written with ambiguous wording which didn't provide a clear answer to what the desired output was. The second question asked why you wanted to work for them, and about your skills. I submitted feedback at the end informing them that their wording should be improved, which I'm sure ended up in a black hole somewhere. Received a cookie cutter rejection notice two days later, after reading some of the internal company reviews and other interview stories, it seems like the rejection may have been a blessing.

      Interview

Half hour technical screener on Hackerrank after you apply. Followed by a HR screener if you passed. Next stage is another technical test on Hackerrank. After that is an interview with two developers going over your previous technical test and just a conversation to see how you think. Lastly is an HR behavioural question type interview.
