      Marketing Coordinator Interview

      9 Feb 2014
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Brantford, ON
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at L P International (Brantford, ON) in Nov 2013

      Interview

A tight knit family owned business with the elderly owner and his wife doing the interview. It started with his jaw almost visibly dropping while mentioning "Well, you've go to be one of the oldest applicants we've seen". Nice start. They are both clearly older than me. They had a very poor conception of what they were looking for, even asking me if they had the description as "Marketing Coordinator" correct. As it turns out, they described two different disciplines, neither one being a good match to what was in the online job description. One would be much like a Marketing Coordinator, really baby sitting the needs of their sales team for leads, brochures, trade show logistics and day to day number crunching. The other need was for a graphic designer with exceptional video production skills. And they expected all this to be done by one person who was a guru at everything, for basic to medium wages. Before the interview started they left me with a multiple choice test that seemed geared to people straight out of high school looking for entry level factory work. After they picked my brain for suggestions on job titles they asked how I would improve their marketing image and their videos. Then the wife threw up a red herring by asking if I had proficiency in a project management program that was not on the description list, among the dozen programs that were. I think this was a tactic to blow me off because they kept going back to my lack of experience on this one unmentioned program. e.g. you don't ask a taxi driver if he's ever flown an airplane and tell him 'No? That's too bad, it's at the heart of everything we do here". Things were already going down hill awkwardly before this but that was the death knell. Overall they were very sloppy in their use of the time we had and seemed unprepared and close minded.
