      Senior Product Manager Interview

      24 Aug 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Klaviyo in Aug 2020

      Interview

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the interviews were all conducted remotely over the course of 3.5 weeks. Process included: - 30 minute call with technical recruiter - Hour-long video call with Group Product Manager - Take home assignment (suggested 4 hours of work) - "On-site" interview that included video calls (varying in length from 30 minutes to an hour) with senior product manager, lead engineer, group product manager and product manager to go through a "white-boarding" exercise, designer and product manager, group product manager, and CPO. The process was pretty straight forward and I enjoyed all of the conversations I had with the people I met. The questions were all straight forward and your run-of-the-mill PM questions: i.e. when did you have to use data to make a decision, how do you manage competing priorities, how do you measure success of a product, walk me through your process from ideation to release, etc... Everyone I met seemed like they genuinely loved working at Klaviyo and they were also all actively engaged during the interviews. And the recruiter had been communicative and helpful throughout the process leading up to the final round interview. However, like other reviewers here, I was also ghosted after the final round interview. I was told that I would be contacted with next steps in the following days. When I was not contacted I followed up with the recruiter a couple of times for an update but was ignored. It took emailing one of the individuals I interviewed with to understand what the outcome was and they were kind enough to deliver feedback as to why they were not extending an offer. I share the same sentiments with other posters that the "ghosting" method is disrespectful and unprofessional not only to the candidates but to the current members of the product team as it becomes a poor reflection on them. It was a time-consuming process for both candidates and employees - costing candidates a lot of opportunity cost (especially in the middle of the pandemic) and costing the company money by taking up important resources. Additionally, the feedback I received did not line up with what had been conveyed to me throughout the process. I was told they were looking for resourceful, data-driven product managers that would be able to take on any task but was told that I did not fit the needs of the team because I did not deep enough experience in a certain area. While I was upset that I did not receive an offer, had I been told in a timely manner about the decision I would have rated this as very positive experience. However, the "ghosting" tactic quickly turned it into a negative experience. Nonetheless, it seems like it's an exciting time for Klaviyo and they do have a talented team in place to help take in forward. Hopefully they are able to work out their kinks in the recruiting process and talent recognition so that it no longer reflects poorly on the rest of the company.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Klaviyo (Boston, MA) in Nov 2022

      Interview

Really quick process; I was contacted within a week of submitting my application and had a round scheduled with Brian, a talent recruiter at Klaviyo, almost immediately. I felt Brian was a world-class recruiter as he was very informed about the position, about the company, about PM's role in the organization and he set really clear expectations about the next steps. I actually noted that Glassdoor interview reviews stated that PM interviews could take weeks and had quite negative feedback, and he was able to speak to that and affirm to me that they'd made changes and the process was much quicker and clearer now. I didn't end up getting the job after round 2 (which I enjoyed! I spoke with a product lead / hiring manager, and although I do wish this interview had been a little sooner after round 1 it still wasn't an unreasonable gap between rounds), but Klaviyo was really quick to let me know that I was not moving forward. Brian provided additional feedback upon request. Figured I should leave a review here since I had a really positive experience, but they hired a candidate into the role before I got to the written assessment stage, so I can't speak to the full flow.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Talk about the process/a time when you took something from idea to concept to validation to execution. Talk about how I work with Engineering. Talk about a problem/challenge I faced and how I resolved it. Pretty standard stuff!
