      Engineering Manager Interview

      2 Oct 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      Declined offer
      Neutral experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Justworks (New York, NY) in Jun 2024

      Interview

Overall - JustWorks appears to be going through a big reorganization (again). From my interview process, you can tell there is a good amount of bureaucracy and politics at play and nobody seems to have a good amount of ownership of their teams. As for the interviews themselves, most of the interviewees were unprepared so the interviews themselves were more about creating meaningful conversations than learning more about my career challenges.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Q: How do you ensure a team's roadmap is organized and prepared to be worked on?

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Justworks in Dec 2023

      Interview

Total 4 rounds after the screening round by recruiter. After those 4 rounds, I was told that they needed me to talk about the career growth of my team in one of the rounds while I had focused more on process improvements etc. I was not offered but overall, it was a good experience interviewing with them.

      1. Hiring manager screening - by a fellow EM 2. System design - by two team members. 3. Technical Leadership - By two team members (IC) 4. Stakeholder - by a Product manager on "Tell me when"

      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Justworks (New York, NY) in Aug 2023

      Interview

An internal recruiter reached out to me on LinkedIn and after the initial phone screen I was given a choice between a take-home exercise & live coding challenge as next steps. I personally don’t like either of these practices as they perpetuate bias in different ways, but I chose take-home as I knew that’s where I would perform better. I completed & submitted the assignment and was contacted a few days later to set up the next interview. Imagine my surprise when I was told this next interview would include a *live coding challenge.* I responded saying there must be a miscommunication because I had already chosen to complete the take-home, at which point I was informed there had been “a slight change in process” that would now require me to not only go over the take-home but also “do a quick live coding exercise.” When I pushed back saying I wasn’t comfortable with the change in process, they canceled my interview. As someone who has recruited & hired my own team, I would be embarrassed to treat candidates this way.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

“You have the option to do either an hour-long paired program challenge over zoom OR a take-home technical assignment as a next step… [2 weeks later] …just kidding you have to do both!!”
