Full Stack Ruby On Rails Developer Interview

      30 Jan 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      London, England
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Judge.me (London, England) in Dec 2023

      Interview

The initial screen involved talking to their operations manager and a consultant that they hired specifically to conduct their technical interviews. The part with the operations manager was okay, but the technical part was a bit strange since I couldn't ask questions about how their tech works since the person conducting the technical part of the interview did not work for JudgeMe. After I passed the first round, they gave me an online assessment exam that only takes about 30 minutes to finish. They also gave me a take home exam that, in their words, was supposed to take 4-5 hours on average. 4-5 hours is already pretty long, but in reality, the whole thing took me about 18 hours to complete. They handed me a legacy Rails 6 app that was broken out of the box. Just updating the dependencies and getting it to run already took me a few hours to do. The assignment itself was also very demanding. They asked me to create 3 pages based on a mockup which involved creating multiple features to pull off. I managed to finish everything, but I got rejected over some nitpicks that the CTO found over my submission. Some of their nitpicks were actually wrong, so I'm guessing they were looking for very specific solutions and the take home exam wasn't as open-ended as they say. My experience with their interview process was really bad. A lot of times, it felt like they didn’t know what they were doing. I thought they had no respect for my time. Hope they improve their interview process because I would not recommend them the way they are at the moment.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked about my background. The technical part of the interview asked general questions about Ruby on Rails and the interviewer will ask for system design questions based on your answers.

Thank you for taking the time to review your interview experience at Judge.me. I am sorry to hear that you did not have a positive experience with us. Rest assured, since your feedback was posted we have been busy working on our developer process to remove some of these pain points and to make it valuable for you just as much as us. We have hired a new CTO, and all of our interviewers are now in-house! We have also fully revised the test, reducing the time taken to set it up, as well as redefining the requirements to make it more manageable in the allotted time. We also have a chat embedded in the test where the candidate can give their rationale for certain decisions. Whilst this process wasn't a match, we wish every success going forward! Thank you once again for your very valuable feedback.
