      Management Trainee Interview

      22 Mar 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Pittston, PA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at J.B. Hunt Transport (Pittston, PA) in Mar 2022

      Interview

Interview with a recruiter over the phone for about 15 minutes. They explain the role and ask what makes you qualified. They setup a Teams interview with area risk manager and operations manager. You’re scheduled for an hour, asked to dress business professional, and to do some research on the company with the websites they link and propaganda-esque video they embed. Teams meeting is awkward and unprofessional on their part. Neither of them turned their camera on or addressed it, so you have no idea if they can see you. Clearly they haven’t reviewed your resume or done any preparation for this. Immediately you’re told this will last about 20 minutes instead of an hour. First question they asked was about a retail position I had in 2010 since they appeared to just work their way backwards on my resume. After a series of basic questions, most of which you’ve already answered with your recruiter, they explain the role in further detail. For the Pittston, PA position, the role isn’t actually in Pittston. You’ll be training for “3-6 months” depending on how fast you pick it up for a salary of 58k. They mention there will be a “pay bump” when you’re no longer a trainee but it’s never discussed what it is. The roles they’re looking to fill are actually in Mountain Top and Hazleton, both an hour from Pittston in their respective directions. You’re never asked if that’s alright with you, I believe because they’re not familiar with the area. Based on their LinkedIn profiles they’re not native to this area so I imagine they have no idea these positions are as far away as they are. You are asked if you’re “okay with relocating down the line for a job promotion.” Never explained where or how soon. Based on some interviews I’ve read on Glassdoor, some people have been asked to relocate across the country for this role. I’m inclined to believe “down the road” may actually mean once you’re no longer a “trainee”. It’s also explained that they’re looking to fill “multiple holes” which based on my experience is a red flag and a nicer way of saying the old “wearing multiple hats” shtick. Meaning you’ll be doing multiple peoples jobs. You’re also asked if you’re okay with taking a hair follicle test which goes back 90 days. Personally, I have no problem. I’m just a bit shocked to learn in 2022 for an office position, they want to expend the money for a hair follicle test. No wonder they need to fill “multiple holes”. After 20 minutes or so of you staring at yourself on Teams, the call concludes. They say they’ll drop their emails in the chat if you have any questions, which they didn’t. Mentally I had already checked out when they mentioned Mountain Top and Hazleton. The hair follicle was the icing on the cake. I should have known from the YouTube video the recruiter embedded in the Teams invite email, this company was behind the times. The video praises good ole JB Hunt himself for leaving his wife and children to start a trucking company in a different part of Arkansas. With his wife, clutching her pearls, singing his praises for moving them with him once he was successful. JB Hunt is notorious for being a mega carrier that drives down rates. They’ll move loads for cheaper and pay their drivers less. Companies like this are responsible for driver pay staying stagnant since the 90s. Since you’ll be dealing first hand with the drivers this is important to note. Within 24 hours I was emailed a generic rejection letter. Perhaps it was the look of disgust on my face after being told the role was actually an hour away, or the 3-4 times they tried to understand how I know MS Office not having graduated college. Not quite sure what they’re looking for, nor do I care. I’ve seen the listing for this position up for quite some time, and I imagine it’ll be there for a while. Good riddance.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at J.B. Hunt Transport (Elizabeth, NJ)

      Interview

Initial phone screening with recruiter, then an in person interview with operation managers, then a teams interview with the director of the region. I had a positive experience during this process, the phone screening was very basic interview questions. The in person interview was very laid back, they toured me around the facility, told me a lot about the position and then asked me a couple of questions. The call with the director consisted of more situational and in-depth questions.
