Initially I was to speak with Rob Staad, be it a Saturday he was not available so I was assisted by a supervisor named “Rocco”… everyone knows an Interview or a road test is nail biting stressful and after being at Pepsi for 24 years it was a nerve racking encounter… I say nerve racking,, because as soon as Rocco and I started talking I began explaining the reason why I was 10 minutes late and he looked at me and said
“your 10 minutes late, I’m not doing the road test”
As serious as he can be, so looking directly at him I was about to say “ok I apologize and understand” when he started to crack a smile and say
“Ahhh Im just kidding”. Well that right there broke the ice and actually allowed me to destress a little, Please don’t get me wrong because immediately after encountering Rocco the SECOND thing he said, and that was only because he joked with me first, but the second thing he said was
“ we are very very safety oriented company, VERY”, believe me I got the point. I’m serious when I say the word safety came out if his mouth about 20+ times.
Ok se we walked to where the trucks were parked and the first thing I noticed was how remarkably clean and perfectly organized this place was, lol I been to food and beverage establishments that holds a candle to IWS in cleanliness and just how organized this place was, and remember they are a garbage collecting company. Ok so we get to the trucks and Rocco finishes telling me everything about the company and personal experiences which really helps when choosing a company to give the next 20 years if your life.
So after he’s done explaining things to me he says
“Ok do your Pre-Trip safely walk around” I was honest and said where I came from it was not enforced so we got laxed, that was all he needed to hear for him to say “NOT HERE” that is a must when you pull out and pull in, if something is not working properly or such, let a supervisor know right away… then the truck will be taken out of active use I til it’s repaired. So he helped with the Pre-Trip and explained everything while constantly saying “you can now report enough”, plus you gain safety points for everything you report!
Ok se we jump in and start driving, I’m driving big trucks over 20 years so although it was a cab over I picked it up right away. Even though Rocco was still explaining the job, the company, things that a potential employee needs to hear to make a decision. I went on and on and I apologize and really hope this post helps someone or such.
While leaving he was pleasant and said
“You passed” and that he will everything off to the Operation Manager Rob, who from a handful of people already told me was a very smart, fair guy. And not just IWS employees….
