      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Instrumentl (Upland, CA) in Aug 2022

      Interview

The job posting required a resume and cover letter. I submitted both and received an email from Instrumentl on a Saturday asking me to complete an unpaid take home exercise within 48 hours of the email being sent (it did not specify business hours, so I did it over the weekend). The exercise took longer than the 45 minutes estimated in the directions. The exercise was doing research and proofreading grant application direction details. The instructions were confusing and seemed to ask for the same information repeatedly with each question. I passed the take home exercise and they sent me a Calendly link to set up a zoom interview. I learned things about the job during the interview that were deal breakers for me, so I declined to move forward in the hiring process on the spot. It would’ve been nice to have a screening with this information provided before spending an hour and 15 minutes on their take home exercise. Also, requiring a college degree for a minimum wage job was a red flag I should’ve recognized beforehand.

Hello, thank you for sharing your feedback about the interview process! I apologize for the lack of clarity around the exercise, and I’ve passed it on to the hiring manager to set better expectations for the future. I'm sorry you didn't hear those dealbreakers sooner -- we’ll update our process to include certain details earlier, as we certainly want to be respectful of your time :) Since this role is a bit niche, we’ve previously found that the actual tasks are more helpful for people to understand first; thank you for helping us improve upon our understanding!

      Application

I interviewed at Instrumentl (Walnut, CA)

      Interview

After submitting a tailored cover letter and resume with references, I received a gushing email from Kate Robinson about how impressive I was as a job candidate. She invited me to complete the next stage of the interview process, a "take-home exercise" which involved doing main task cited in the job announcement. Nope! I refuse to give them an hour of free labor.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

The "take-home exercise" involves "reviewing examples of webpage changes, then comparing them to images of an Instrumentl page and suggesting relevant edits."

Hey there, thanks for adding your review of our interview process! I want to clarify that the take-home exercise is an example pulled from historical work, and it is reused and given to all candidates for this role. None of what you do in this exercise is original or used in our operations; we don’t use it for anything beyond evaluating your relevant skills, and seeing if you like the work that the job entails :) I’m sorry that this wasn’t made clear at the beginning of your take home exercise – but please know we do our best to be respectful of candidates' time to make sure they understand & are a good fit for the role.
