      Senior Designer Interview

      22 Jan 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at INDECOR Home (New York, NY) in Jan 2025

      Interview

The company requires an in person interview of 30-45 minutes. At the end of the meeting they request an unpaid test project. The project is very extensive and requests market research of shopping stores, and designing two complete collections. The position is advertised as a salary role with benefits, seemingly a direct to hire position. However I was told there will be a 3 month trial where I will be paid as a freelancer. I was told this would be a flat weekly rate, despite being required to communicate with factories outside of business hours and perhaps working late. I usually don’t write these reviews but was very shocked at a company asking for unpaid work for consideration. I have been working as a professional in this industry for 15 years as a senior designer, design manager and freelance cad designer. I have a website portfolio with hundreds of work samples and references.

Hi, and thank you for taking the time to share your interview experience. We appreciate the effort that goes into preparing a take-home assessment. In our industry, these are a common part of the interview process and help us understand how a candidate communicates ideas, translates trends into salable products, and presents their work. For candidates, it’s an opportunity to get a feel for how we collaborate—specifically, how feedback flows between the creative director, product development, and the design team. We always clarify that in-store or comp shopping is a suggestion, and not a requirement for this assessment, and we never use submitted work in any commercial capacity. Regarding work hours, we do not require—or request—designers to stay late. Communication with overseas partners may occasionally fall outside business hours, but this is infrequent and not part of the role during the 90-day probationary period. Our designers manage their own time, and if they choose to work outside standard hours, it’s at their discretion. We’re proud of the team we’ve built and always appreciate feedback that helps us improve our hiring process. Thank you again, and we wish you the best in your career.
