      Instructional Designer Interview

      21 May 2024

      No offer
      Positive experience

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at ICON

      Interview

I had a chat with the recruiter first. Then I had a written test, which was reasonably easy. I was then invited to interview with two members of their team. They were all very pleasant to deal with. At the beginning, they invite you to have material in front of you if you'd like to refer to it at any point of the interview. They do try to put people at ease. I felt, though, that some of the questions didn't seem relevant to the role. Even though they weren't relevant, I definitely had better examples to give than I thought of in the interview, which is also a shame. It was the thing that they noted in their feedback that they thought that I had better examples that I could have given. I did ask a question about future development opportunities within the role, but the interviewer proceeded to speak about the basic onboarding. I think that they hadn't really listened to my question, and the same when I clarified my question after they answered, but I guess they had their answer by then and were moving on to the next candidate so weren't as invested in answering. Though it was a reasonably positive experience, I think better clarity and communication generally would have been good.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked about management experience and approach to managing teams, though this wasn't at all a management role, and it wasn't mentioned previously in the job spec or by the recruiter. This was one of the questions that wasn't relevant and definitely threw me even though I have plenty of experience managing teams.
