I submitted a resume to careerbuilder.com upon seeing a posted position for a Sales Manager. The next day I received an email response saying:You are highly encouraged to take a copy of your resume into your nearest Hudson's location! I called the nearest location, the one the job was posted for. Of course I got an associate who assumed I was a potential sale and gave me the runaround when he found out I wasn't. When I finally did get the S.M. she asked if I could come in that afternoon. Of course I agreed to be there and got ready to go on the fly (<45minutes including drive time) and was promptly greeted by the S.M. who took me to the front of the store for the interview. It seemed she decided I was a poor candidate when she greeted me with a relative lack of enthusiasm. She confirmed this when she looked at my resume and smugly skipped to the only retail sales experience I had from over six years ago. She only questioned me on this experience and asked nothing about my job as GM at a high volume chain restaurant. I guess she doesn't see any parallel in her business. That said she asked me some baited questions to which I responded honestly. My mistake. It turns out none of the information their web post is realistic for what the job requires. They are a business as usual, "realistic" quota driven sales environment in which you must sell warranties and add on "products" or you will be given an opportunity to improve. That being said, she was pretty dismissive in her tone and I walked away feeling I wasted my time in coming in. She could have dismissed me over the phone without me wasting gas to get there. I don't have a job after all and could have used that gas to look for one of my non real restaurant jobs that aren't taken seriously by smug superior retail grease ball sales managers. After meeting her I decided not to go back into retail even if it means slinging burgers for a while at a fast food joint. The positive I got from this. I now remember why I once said I will never go back to selling furniture again. If you are a go getter and are willing to do whatever it takes to make a sale and reach a quota. Go to Hudson's and apply. The furniture is nice. If you aren't don't bother applying because, "the job post is always up" and it isn't a real prospect unless you are a "good producer."
