I was recruited by a staffing agency, was interviewed first by them and then by my eventual boss at Highlights. Since no HR person from Highlights was involved, there were no pesky "tell about a difficult problem you solved" sort of questions. The employer laid out the work that needed to be done and asked if I could do each step, and I gave examples of my past experience to show that I could. I was given a written test to check my spelling and grammar skills. I also had to pass a drug screen and background check.
